I think a successful site has to use multiple marketing approaches.  Online marketing is very essential for an online business.  Traditional marketing such as newspaper advertising can help but, by itself, it may not drive enough traffic to a website.  For example, let's assume you have a newspaper circulation of 1,000,000 ....how many of these readers will see the advertisement and at the same time have access to computers or the Internet?  Furthermore, how many will take the steps to save the information and then go and checkout the website?  This is the reason why many Internet companies focus primarily on web marketing and leave traditional marketing as an additional advertising channel.

By the way, I have noticed that many members, when they post a message in this vacation rental community, are not taking advantage of the signature option.  And when they do place a signature, they are not placing links back to their website in a search engine friendly way.  The following explains how it's done:

everyone in the vacation rental community should take advantage of the services offered by www.vrwd.com.  these guys have a great service and a very helpful site.  people need to take advantage of as many inexpensive online tools as possible in these days, instead of paying management companies 30% of their income.  keep up the good work guys.

Milan, thank you for the compliments.     Your vacation rental listing website www.arrangeyourvacation.com is just as nice!  Your site is also ranked in the top page of Google under the most popular term 'Vacation Rentals' just like www.VRWD.com!  So, I believe that property owners should list their vacation rental on both of these sites to increase their vacation rental exposure.   But, they should also advertise on several more directories to maximize their exposure.

By the way, I am always surprised to hear how "frugal" property owners are when it comes to advertising their vacation rental.   All vacation rental listing sites are very inexpensive.  The return on investment is so high for property owners, and therefore it would be wise for them to list their properties on multiple vacation rental listing sites.  I advertise my properties in over 20 directories.  The only site that never generated a booking for me is vacationhomes.com (I have been there for 4 years), but I still continue to advertise there because all it takes is 1 booking to make it worthwhile (in my case, one booking will pay 60 years of advertising on this site - they charge $169/year).
