Vacation Rentals Hit the Big Time!

If you were one of the millions of football fans watching the Super Bowl last night, (or if you were just watching for the commericals!) you might have noticed a 30 second spot with some of America's most iconic family travelers - the Griswold's.  For those not quite educated in Pop-Culture film, these are the cult classic characters played by Chevy Chase and Beverly DeAngleo in multiple National Lampoon's Vacation movies.  The online Vacation Rental listing giant Homeaway.com is responsible for not only reviving an entire generations funny bone, but also putting the Vacation Rental industry on the map with this (estimated) $2.6 million 30 second commerical.

The commercial portrayed the Griswold's on another much anticipated, but disasutrous, vacation at a percieved upscale hotel.  This hotel, as many have probably experienced at one point, had tiny hotel rooms and so many hidden fees, Clark (Chevy Chase) decided it would be better if he just ate his bill in front of the front desk manager.  While commical, the commerical did get its point across (although brief) that there is a new kid on the block when it comes to Family Vacation lodging - Vacation Rentals.

Here on the Outer Banks, we have been spoiled as we have known about this hidden jewel and have experienced them through the thousands of Outer Banks Vacation Rentals up and down our coastline.  While it is a little early to tell if this really lauches the Vacation Rental indusry as a whole, or if it is just another fly by night website that had VC money to burn, that remains to be seen.  As a professional Vacation Rental Management firm on the Outer Banks, Resort Realty is hoping to leverage the exposure paid for by Homeaway.com to continue enticing vacationers like the Griswold's to stay at our wonderful Outer Banks Beach Rentals.

Yes, we hope that their commercial is a success so that the entire industry can benefit.

However, the few reviews of the ad appear to be mixed. The Hollywood Reporter called it hilarious while TVSquad.com said the resurrection of the Griswold family was brilliant, but the San Diego Union-Tribune blasted HomeAway’s spot for essentially being a teaser for a longer commercial on its Web site: “Commercials for ads? That’s just super lame.” And The Wall Street Journal says HomeAway’s ad “didn’t score well.”
